L’invenzione del battente o battiporta, a Bologna ‘il martello di casa’, ebbe la funzione di favorire la difesa della porta, privilegiata via d’accesso ai meandri nascosti degli interni… ma anche marziale strumento per annunciare l’arrivo dell’ospite. Non a caso si chiama anche picchiotto, che deriva dal verbo ‘picchiare’.
Spesso questi oggetti ebbero una vera e propria funzione magica, ovvero quella di allontanare e annullare le influenze malvagie che potevano guastare la casa e i suoi abitanti. Così apparvero mostri e bestie feroci che, minacciosi, stavano di guardia all’ingresso, sulla pubblica via.
Nel linguaggio del Tarocchino bolognese, poi, ‘Ai martelli di casa’ è il nome con il quale oggi si designa l’Asso di Spade (mentre anticamente questa valenza spettava al Cavaliere di Bastoni) nel voler significare l’arrivo imminente di qualcosa o qualcuno, che bussa alla porta (anche ‘martello’ è sinonimo di picchiotto).
Affascinato da queste opere, l'autore ha vagato per Bologna, fotografandone alcuni per le vie della città, quelli che gli si paravano di fronte.
Ora li presenta in questa carrellata come se fossero magici tarocchi da collezione.

The invention of the knockers, in Bologna had the function of favoring the defense of the door, privileged entry to the hidden intricacies of the interior ... but also martial tool to announce the guest's arrival. In fact, in Italian word 'knocker' comes from the verb 'to beat'.
Often these objects had a real magical function: to remove and undo the evil influences that could spoil the home and its inhabitants. So appeared monsters and ferocious beasts. They stood guard at the entrance, on the public highway.
In the language of the Bolognese Tarocchino, then, 'Ai Martelli di casa' is the name by which today designates the Ace of Spade (while once this value was up to the Knight of Wands) in to signify the imminent arrival of something or someone who knocks on the door (also martelli-hammer is synonymous with knocker).
Fascinated by these works, the author roamed Bologna, photographing some of them in the streets of the city, the ones that he met.
Now he presents them in this series as if they were magic tarot collection.
